Activists Recruiting Undercover Investigators

The activist group, Mercy for Animals is recruiting undercover investigators to go on farms, according to an alert sent to members of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) this week.

“While there is no cause for alarm, this does serve as a reminder to be vigilant when it comes to hiring practices,” DFA said in its notice.

In addition to doing thorough background checks on job applicants, make sure you have up-to-date standard operating procedures regarding animal care and wellness, and provide training that teaches employees best management practices.

In addition, ensure you have policies in place for the use of cell phones, cameras and recording devices; and protocols requiring employees to sign statements that they have read and will follow farm policies, recommends DFA.

Also, make sure employees know they are to immediately report to management any violations they witness. While animal abuse is the exception rather than the norm, it must be reported promptly to make sure it can be addressed in a timely manner.

“If you suspect an employee is undercover, or see any signs of animal abuse or neglect, reach out to local law enforcement immediately,” recommends DFA.
