Half-Ton, 103rd Butter Sculpture Unveiled at Pennsylvania Farm Show

Weighing in at 1,000 pounds and one of the most visited attractions throughout the week, the 103rdbutter sculpture was debuted Thursday at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg, Penn.

This year’s Farm Show butter sculpture encourages Pennsylvanians to find their power, and it features some everyday heroes transformed into superheroes by drinking milk, according to WGAL News. Going along with the theme Choose PA Dairy, “Find Your Power,” the sculpture features a soldier, a doctor, a firefighter, an athlete and a dairy farmer – all wearing superhero capes.

“People from across the commonwealth look forward to Farm Show each year, and this sculpture is one of the most beloved parts of this annual event,” said Gov. Tom Wolf at the unveiling. “But it’s more than just butter. It’s a way for us to honor our dairy industry in a fun and memorable way — an industry that we work hard to promote and support year-round.”

The sculptors of the half-ton project, Jim Victor and Marie Pelton, started sculpting the centerpiece with butter donated by Land O’Lakes in mid-December. The duo has been sculpting this iconic exhibit at the Farm Show for several years.

“The butter sculpture sends a powerful message and is a great reminder to consumers to choose local Pennsylvania milk and dairy products,” said Marilyn Hershey of Ar-Joy Farms on behalf of the state’s dairy farm families. “Milk’s nutrients fuel our body and our brain, so no matter what you do in life, be sure to get three servings of dairy every day.”

The unveiling of the sculpture marks the unofficial start of the Farm Show, according to Penn Live. Along with Gov. Wolf, Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding and former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch were also present to assist with the day’s festivities. The eight-day event runs Jan. 5-12 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center.

At the conclusion of the farm show, the butter will be taken to Reinford Farm, a nearby dairy, where it will be melted down and converted into renewable energy.
