Reynolds Family Awarded 2019 DFA Northeast Area Member of Distinction
The Reynolds family, owners of Cross Winds Dairy & Daughters in Alburgh, Vt., has been named among the 2019 Members of Distinction by Dairy Farmers of America (DFA).
The Members of Distinction program recognizes dairy farmers who excel on their operations, in their communities and in the industry. Honorees inspire others through their actions, leadership and involvement. They represent the best of the dairy industry.
DFA comprises nearly 14,000 farmer-owners across the United States. Each year, one notable member farm from each of DFA’s seven regional Areas is selected to receive this honor. Cross Winds Dairy & Daughters represents the Cooperative’s Northeast Area.
As first-generation dairy farmers, Newton and Darlene Reynolds, along with their four daughters, have found success by focusing on cow comfort, water quality and their community to grow from 150 cows to more than 650 cows.
“The biggest thing for me is that if my cows aren’t comfortable, if their water is not clean or if they don’t have food in front of them, then they’re not making any milk,” says Serena, the Reynoldses’ eldest daughter.
Being active in the community by building relationships and creating trust has also been an important part of Cross Wind Dairy & Daughters’ success.
“We’ve been here for 24 years, and we try to hire local people to work with us on the farm,” says Serena. Adds Newton, “You need to help your community and all the people around you because some day you may need their help.”
With this philosophy and their focus on taking care of cows, Cross Winds Dairy & Daughters will likely continue for generations to come.
“One thing that I tell every young couple is to never take no for an answer and never believe in the word can’t, there’s always a way,” says Newton.
