Social Campaign Funds Local School, Honors Dairyman’s Legacy
In February the dairy industry was shocked by the loss of John Pagel. Pagel, founder of Pagel’s Ponhderosa, Kewaunee, Wis., was a prominent dairy farmer and leader in Wisconsin. As a way to honor his memory and support the local high school ag program, his family has started a social media campaign.
During the month of June, Julie Veldhuis will donate $1 to the Kewaunee Ag Center for every picture or video posted on social media of somebody drinking a glass of milk with the hashtag #DrinkOneForJohn. Ponderosa Dairy is matching the funds dollar for dollar.
To date, the campaign has raised $5,000, but there’s still time for you to help. Simply include a hashtag for an opportunity to honor Pagel’s memory and support agriculture education.
Pagel began his dairy career on a 60-cow dairy farm. He grew it to an operation that now includes an operation near Kewaunee that milks some 5,000 cows, another in southwest Kansas that milks 4,500 cows, a Wisconsin cheese factory and a restaurant in Green Bay. Pagel was also prominent in the formation of the Wisconsin Dairy Business Association in 1999, the American Dairy Coalition, and Edge, a milk marketing cooperative. Pagel was president of Edge since its founding in 2010.
