Springer Values Showing Promise

Springer Values Showing Promise

The values for Holstein springing heifers held steady or inched slightly upward in most markets this past month, and are 20-40% higher compared to last year at this time. The exception is Wisconsin, where springer values fell sharply, and dairy herds continue to exit the industry at a faster-than-normal pace. USDA data shows dairy cow slaughter running higher than a year ago at this time, with the national heifer inventory standing at 44.1 per 100 milk cows. This is the lowest ratio since milk prices fell off in 2009, and may signal stronger replacement values going forward. Heifer calf sales remain light and prices remain weak nationwide.
